Father and son Stephen and Brenton Grove will make history when they compete in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup round at Spa-Francorchamps (August 30-September 1).
The pair will converge on the world-famous circuit in Belgium to drive separate entries, with Stephen continuing his full-season campaign in Pro-Am with Team Australia and Brenton joining MRS GT Racing as a one-off in the outright class.
In doing so, the Groves will become the first-ever father-son duo to race in Porsche Supercup at the same event.
MRS GT Racing is the same team Grove Snr drove with at the 2018 24 Hours of Dubai as well as his part-time campaign in Porsche Supercup last year.
In preparation for the Spa-Francorchamps event at the end of the month, both Groves will make a return to Porsche Payce Carrera Cup Australia at The Bend Motorsport Park the weekend prior.
There, reigning Carrera Cup Australia Pro-Am champion Stephen will get back behind the wheel of the Grove Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car he has fielded at selected rounds of Carrera Cup Australia this year.
Grove Jnr will pilot an Ashley Seward Motorsport-prepared car at The Bend on return to the category.
The Bend event will act as a warm-up for Spa as both drivers aim to condition themselves to help with preparation, with practice time at Supercup events limited.
It won't be Stephen's first time at Spa, the Melburnian having sampled Porsche machinery at the iconic circuit as part of a one-off drive in Carrera Cup France at Spa-Francorchamps in 2017.
While the prospect of driving on the world stage in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will be one of the highlights of Brenton's career thus far, he’s confirmed the opportunity will not become a regular occurrence.
It comes after impressive form for the pair in their respective series this year.
Stephen has scored four top three results in Porsche Supercup’s Pro-Am class this season, while Brenton enjoyed two top-five finishes, including a second place in the Townsville Dunlop Super2 Series round with Triple Eight Race Engineering in July.
Carrera Cup Australia’s round at The Bend Motorsport Park takes place from August 23-25, while Round 7 of Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup takes place from August 30-September 1.
STEPHEN GROVE QUOTEBOARD:
“It’s fantastic to have Brenton join the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup grid at Spa — it’s not often you get a father and son racing in the same series, especially at this level. Spa is a very special track, one of the best in the world and it’s got some great corners. I haven’t raced there for a few years, but I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel there. It will be an important round to keep working hard to consolidate our position in the series as we head into the back part of the season.”
“Both Brenton and I are going to the Carrera Cup Australia round at The Bend to prepare for the Spa Supercup round. For me, that will mean running without ABS because in Supercup we don’t run it. The Bend is quite a fast and free-flowing circuit, so we’re just trying to set ourselves up for Spa which is unbelievably fast and has high-speed corners. The Bend weekend will all be about conditioning ourselves and building up to Spa, so we’re not too fussed on where we position ourselves, as long as we can have a dip and warm-up for Spa.”
BRENTON GROVE QUOTEBOARD:
“I’ve progressed through the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge, Porsche Payce Carrera Cup Australia and Michelin Junior program, so this is just a further opportunity to advance within the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid. At least I won’t be going in with my eyes shut. Porsche do an awesome job to develop juniors and it’s a proven channel. It’s a positive framework to be part of both as a driver and team manager. The domestic championships in Australia are both competitive and professional, hence why we keep coming back each year.”
ASM TEAM MANAGER, ASHLEY SEWARD:
“I’ve watched Brenton race in a number of categories – he has an analytical approach to his racing and is good at adapting to different vehicles, so we’re looking forward to having him in our car for Tailem Bend. The Porsche Supercup is the most competitive one-make series in the world, and the level of competition is extremely high, so we’ll be doing our best to ensure Brenton is as well-prepared as possible for his outing at Spa.”
